Senior PLC Engineer (Freelance)Location: North Holland, NetherlandsContract: Freelance (32-40 hours per week)Start: October 2026Duration: Long-term assignment*Dutch Language Skills Required*The OpportunityAn established engineering consultancy is looking for an experienced Senior PLC Engineer to support a major industrial automation project in North Holland.This is a long-term opportunity for an engineer who enjoys taking ownership of automation projects from the design phase through to testing and commissioning, working closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams and end users.What You'll Be DoingReview customer requirements and translate them into technical automation solutions.Produce functional and software design documentation (FDS/SDS).Develop and modify PLC software for industrial control systems.Design communication between PLCs, SCADA systems, field devices and third-party equipment.Configure industrial communication networks, including Profinet, Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP and OPC UA.Improve the security and resilience of PLC and SCADA environments.Prepare test documentation and support validation activities.Execute Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and Site Acceptance Tests (SAT).Provide on-site commissioning and start-up support.Produce clear technical documentation throughout the project lifecycle.What We're Looking ForProven experience as a PLC Engineer within industrial automation.Strong experience with Allen Bradley PLCs. Engineers with solid Siemens TIA Portal experience who are keen to work with Allen Bradley are also encouraged to apply.Experience developing PLC software for complex industrial installations.Knowledge of industrial networking and communication protocols.Experience creating technical documentation, including FDS/SDS.Hands-on experience with FAT, SAT and commissioning.Strong communication skills and the ability to work directly with customers and project teams.Experience with lock or bridge automation projects would be advantageous.What's on OfferLong-term freelance engagement with the potential to extend for several years.Challenging industrial automation projects with a well-established engineering team.Opportunity to work across the complete project lifecycle, from concept through commissioning.Hybrid working with a minimum of three days per week on site in North Holland.Competitive hourly rate, depending on experience.
