About the jobSenior Backend Engineer — Python & AILocation: Remote SpainCompensation: 40 to 45 KAbout the OpportunityWe’re partnering with DeepMimic, an AI-powered platform for research, simulation, analysis and report generation.We’re looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to take real technical ownership of the backend and help evolve the platform as it scales.This is not simply a feature-development role. You’ll be responsible for the health, evolution and reliability of the backend, while helping turn experimental AI capabilities into robust, maintainable production software.You’ll join a compact, multidisciplinary technical team spanning backend, frontend, infrastructure, product and AI. Each area has clear ownership, while cross-functional decisions are made collaboratively.What You’ll DoTake technical ownership of the backend, developing a deep understanding of its architecture, flows and dependenciesDesign and build APIs, business logic, data models and backend processesMaintain and evolve the existing codebase, improving it incrementally without unnecessarily rewriting working systemsBuild and maintain asynchronous and long-running processes, including pipelines, workers, state management, retries and concurrencyBuild AI-powered backend capabilities, including LLM integrations, structured outputs, context management and orchestrationOwn LLM performance, scalability and cost, including latency, throughput and consumption per customerEvolve databases through schema changes, migrations, backfills and data transformationsMaintain strong authentication, authorisation and data isolation between organisationsDiagnose problems end-to-end and improve testing, observability and recoveryWork closely with frontend and infrastructure engineers to build and operate complete product capabilitiesContribute to improving engineering processes, automation, testing relational databases, data modelling, transactions, query optimisation and migrationsExperience designing systems resilient to failure, including timeouts, retries, idempotency, state management and recoveryExperience with automated testing, Git, code review and CI/CDPractical knowledge of API security, authentication and authorisationStrong debugging and root-cause analysis skills across application, data, asynchronous processes and infrastructureProven ability to work autonomously and prioritise between functionality, reliability and technical debtFluency with Claude Code or similar AI-assisted development tools, using them in real engineering workflows without compromising quality, security or maintainabilityTech StackBackend: Python, FastAPIArchitecture: APIs, asynchronous
