The ideal candidate will be a genuine engineering generalist who understands how different parts of a production system fit together and is comfortable moving between backend, frontend, APIs, databases and wider system architecture.What you'll be doingBuilding, maintaining and debugging production software across the full technology stack.Developing backend services using Java – this is a non-negotiable requirement.Working with Python or Node.js for scripting and backend development.Building and maintaining APIs that interact directly with databases and other systems.Working with relational and distributed database technologies.Contributing to the frontend, with React/JavaScript experience highly desirable.Troubleshooting complex production issues and implementing safe, effective patches and fixes.Navigating unfamiliar codebases and quickly understanding how different systems interact.Working across distributed systems, data pipelines and wider system architecture.Maintaining a strong focus on automation, testing and code quality.What we're looking for5+ years' professional software engineering experience.Strong, hands-on Java development experience – essential.Experience with Python or Node.js as a scripting/backend language.Strong understanding of APIs, databases and how systems interact.Full-stack experience, ideally including React/JavaScript.A broad understanding of software systems and architecture.Experience working within complex production environments.Someone comfortable context-switching between different technologies and problems.A pragmatic engineer who can investigate an issue, understand the wider system and deliver a safe fix.DesirableExperience with any of the following would be advantageous:MySQL and/or CassandraDistributed systems and high-availability environmentsAWS and containerised servicesC++17+Python backend developmentFinancial markets, exchange technology or FIXLow-latency systemsModern CI/CD and automation practicesWhy this opportunity?The team is currently working through a particularly interesting period of development, with a significant amount of work focused on improving, maintaining and patching existing production systems, alongside longer-term engineering initiatives.
