Discipline Engineer – Process Simulation
Vaestus GmbH
LinkedInjuniorEnglish-friendly
About the RoleWe are hiring a Discipline Engineer with a strong background in process simulation engine development to take ownership of the simulation module of our product – a professional engineering software platform for process and plant design. Our platform includes its own steady-state process simulation engine, integrated live with the flowsheet editor: engineers draw a process, specify streams and unit operations, and see the results solve as they work. This role owns that engine and its integration, combining chemical engineering judgment with hands-on software development.Key ResponsibilitiesSimulation Engine Ownership· Own the Engine – take technical ownership of the simulation engine – thermodynamics, property packages, flash calculations, unit operations, and the flowsheet solver.· Extend the Models – add and improve unit operations (columns, reactors, heat exchangers, compressors, separators) and thermodynamic models as customers need them.· Numerical Robustness – make flashes, recycles, and rigorous column solves converge reliably and fail with clear, honest diagnostics.Validation & Accuracy· Benchmark the Results – validate the engine against reference cases, published data, and established commercial simulators, and document the agreement.· Build Regression Suites – maintain test flowsheets so every change to the engine is checked against known, correct answers.· Defend the Engineering – the numbers engineers rely on are correct, consistent, and traceable.Product & Integration· Integrate with the Editor – work with the software team on the live solver, stream and unit-op specifications, degrees-of-freedom accounting, and results display.· Performance – keep solves fast enough for a live, interactive experience on real plant flowsheets.· Domain Voice – guide the product on how process engineers actually build and troubleshoot simulations, and support customers with demanding cases.Required Skills & Qualifications· Chemical / Process Engineering Degree – MSc or PhD in chemical or process engineering, or equivalent experience.· Process Simulation Expertise – deep, hands-on experience with steady-state process simulation (Aspen Plus, Aspen HYSYS, PRO/II, or similar), including building and troubleshooting complex flowsheets.· Thermodynamics – strong command of equations of state, activity-coefficient models, phase equilibrium, and choosing the right property package.· Numerical Methods – experience with nonlinear solvers, convergence of recycles and distillation columns, and sequential-modular or equation-oriented approaches.· Python Development – writes production-quality Python; comfortable owning a large scientific codebase with tests.· Pragmatic Quality Mindset – balances accuracy, speed, and scope; ships reliable software without over-engineering.· Founding Grit – comfortable with ambiguity and ownership; thrives in an early-stage, fast-moving environment.Preferred / Nice to Have· Experience developing simulation software, not only using it.· Rigorous distillation, absorption, and reactor modelling (kinetics, equilibrium, Gibbs minimization).· Industry experience in oil & gas, chemicals, carbon capture, methanol, or ammonia processes.· Dynamic simulation and process control.· Familiarity with plant-design workflows (PFD, P&ID, heat and material balances). What We Offer· Founding-team role owning one of the core modules of the product.· Competitive salary, performance-based bonus, and meaningful equity.· The opportunity to shape how process simulation is built into modern plant-design software.Sourced from LinkedIn.
