Software Engineer / Forward Deployed Engineer (Java, Data Engineering & AI)Location: AmsterdamFlexible / Hybrid6 months contract with possibility of extensionAbout the RoleWe are seeking a highly skilled Software Engineer / Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) with strong Java development expertise and experience working across full-stack applications, data engineering, and cloud technologies. The ideal candidate will have a passion for building scalable software solutions, owning systems end-to-end, and leveraging AI-driven technologies throughout the software development lifecycle.This role requires strong technical ownership, problem-solving capabilities, and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to design, build, deploy, and maintain business-critical applications.Key ResponsibilitiesSoftware DevelopmentDesign, develop, test, and maintain high-quality software applications using Java and other relevant technologies.Write clean, maintainable, and reusable code following engineering best practices and coding standards.Refactor and optimize existing systems through effective use of software design principles and patterns.Ensure application quality through comprehensive testing strategies and automation.Maintain data security, integrity, and compliance with organizational standards.End-to-End System OwnershipTake full ownership of services and applications throughout their lifecycle.Monitor application health, performance, and operational metrics.Develop and maintain operational documentation, runbooks, and system guides.Drive continuous delivery, experimentation, and deployment best practices.Manage production deployments and support operational excellence.Production Support & Incident ManagementTroubleshoot and resolve production incidents within agreed SLAs.Conduct root cause analysis and implement long-term preventive solutions.Participate in incident management, postmortems, and reliability improvement initiatives.Improve overall system stability, availability, and performance.Architecture & Technical LeadershipContribute to technical solution design aligned with business, functional, and non-functional requirements.Evaluate architectural alternatives considering scalability, performance, cost, and maintainability.Support application modernization and technical roadmap initiatives.Collaborate with stakeholders to influence technical decisions and architectural direction.Systems Design & InnovationDesign scalable and adaptable solutions that meet both current and future business needs.Evaluate new technologies, tools, and vendors to accelerate software development and innovation.Contribute to engineering standards, best practices, and continuous improvement efforts.Continuous ImprovementIdentify opportunities to improve processes, systems, and engineering efficiency.Implement enhancements that drive operational excellence and business performance.Promote a culture of quality, automation, and continuous learning.Communication & CollaborationCommunicate technical concepts effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.Work closely with product, engineering, and business stakeholders.Facilitate constructive discussions and contribute to collaborative decision-making.Actively listen, ask insightful questions, and build strong working relationships.Required Skills & ExperienceTechnical SkillsStrong proficiency in Java (primary development language).Experience with Perl, or willingness to learn.Hands-on experience in Data Engineering environments.Experience with AWS Cloud Services.Exposure to Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies and enthusiasm to apply AI throughout the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC).Strong understanding of software engineering principles, testing methodologies, and system design.Experience with monitoring, observability, CI/CD practices, and production support.Preferred QualificationsExperience working with infrastructure, platforms, tools, and internal systems.Previous experience as a Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE).Full-stack development experience across backend, frontend, and data engineering domains.Experience operating and supporting large-scale distributed systems.Core CompetenciesEnd-to-end ownership mindsetCritical thinking and analytical problem-solvingSystem reliability and operational excellenceSoftware architecture and designContinuous improvement and innovationEffective communication and stakeholder managementCollaboration and teamworkWhat We're Looking ForA proactive engineer who thrives in complex environments, takes ownership of business-critical systems, and enjoys working across development, operations, architecture, and emerging technologies such as AI.
